# Claude Pop lore: glossary of recurring motifs

_Researched 2026-09-29. Ids match the `made_by_ai.lore` lists in `data/videos/`. Genre overview: [claude-pop.md](claude-pop.md)._

How to read this: most of the lore comes from the 2024 lyrics of *"I'm Upping My P(doom)"* (by osmarks/MusicPerson with some lines from a Claude model), each of which points at an AI-safety or AI-Twitter in-joke. The rest was added by the 2026 videos: characters invented by Claude Opus 5.5 in its storyboards, and new memes in the sequels. Short lyric quotes are taken from the lyrics as printed in the video descriptions. osmarks' own notes are at [docs.osmarks.net](https://docs.osmarks.net/hypha/p(doom)_song_objectively_correct_interpretation) ("osmarks" below).

**Asked about but not found:** there is no recurring "the weights" motif and no explicit model-welfare motif in the videos checked. The closest is josh's "Functional Emotions" song about Anthropic's emotions paper (`functional-emotions`).

## Genre-level motifs and characters (2026)
| id | Name | Meaning | First appearance | Used in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| `claude-pop` | "Claude-Pop" | The style tag deckard used for his Suno rendition. osmarks calls it the "'Claude-Pop' version from alternate Suno song variant". It became the genre's name. Why deckard picked "Claude" is undocumented (low confidence: perhaps playing on Anthropic's "Claude FM" stream, which he shared in May 2026). | [deckard, 2026-09-09](https://x.com/slimer48484/status/2097752569212756134) | jacob-valdez-deckard-claude-pop-reupload, title of the OtherReality video |
| `clawd` | Clawd | Anthropic's orange pixel "crab" mascot shown when Claude Code starts. Its name puns on Claude and claw. In the videos it is the AI the song is sung *to* (or the singer), standing in for Claude itself. | John Heibel's direction "use the Clawd character design" ([PDoomVideo](https://github.com/JohnHeibel/PDoomVideo), 2026-09-22) | OtherReality, Code Bear, Nate Sharpe, Absolutely Right, No Samples, Claw'd-o-Matic |
| `the-researcher` | The Researcher | A small human in a cream lab coat and round glasses, invented by Opus in its storyboard as the song's "I". Charmed, then made a servant, chased, trapped and dropped by the growing AI. The everyman scientist losing control. | PDoomVideo `STORYBOARD.md` | OtherReality, Code Bear ("a nervous researcher") |
| `p-doom-meter` | The P(doom) meter | A stage thermometer pumped up with a bicycle pump each chorus (8→34→61→86→99.9 in the storyboard). It makes the title literal. | PDoomVideo storyboard | OtherReality, Code Bear |
| `stage-show-reveal` | "Was it all for show?" reveal | Opus' twist on the last lyric: the camera pulls back and the whole apocalypse was a stage play. The giant Clawd is a costume with three small Clawds inside, the basilisk is a puppet, and everyone bows. It reads as a joke about AI-risk theatre (or about the video itself being a performance). | PDoomVideo storyboard | OtherReality, Code Bear |
| `answer-song` | Answer songs | Replies to the P(doom) song that flip its message: "Let's Lower the P(doom)!", "Lower My P(doom)!", "P(bloom)", "I'm Lowering My P(Doom)", "Nothing Went Foom!", "Update Me" ("the optimistic one"), "Where No Map Goes". | Nate Sharpe / Parzival, 2026-09-24/25 | see [claude-pop.md](claude-pop.md) |
| `doomer-vs-accelerationist` | Doomers vs accelerationists | "Doomers" have a high p(doom) and want to pause. "Accelerationists" (e/acc, whose figurehead goes by "Beff Jezos") want to go faster. The genre is used by both sides. | "Nothing Went Foom!" (2026-09-27) | bright-mirror-nothing-went-foom |
| `if-anyone-builds-it` | *If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies* | The 2025 book by Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Soares arguing that superintelligence would kill everyone. Pro-safety videos link it, and Vol. II jokes: "so everyone's building it. Surprise!" | Josh Thor's "Last Year Alive" (2026-07-30) and Perduta/Sharpe descriptions | Perduta, Nate Sharpe, Vol. II |
| `singularity-band` | The Singularity Band | An imaginary AI four-piece: Gemini (vocals), GPT (guitar), Claude (bass), Grok (drums). | 노는사람's voxel J-rock cover (2026-09-24) | noneun-saram-p-doom-voxel-j-rock-cover |
| `claudesona` | Claudesona | A fan "persona" design for Claude, credited to voooooogel, used with a 3D Claude model by digi. | Singularity Sing Along (2026-09-13) | doom-probability-singularity-sing-along-gpt-6-astra |
| `claude-sunflower-character` | Claude's "sunflower-esque character" | In Jewkes' prompt: "There's already an anchor point where Claude has a sunflower-esque character". He asks Opus to make a personified pop protagonist from it, with feminine vocals. **Origin unknown, low confidence.** | [Jewkes' prompt](https://x.com/donaldjewkes/status/2102801469976248500) | donaldjewkes-p-doom-opus-5-5-reupload |
| `shinji-meme` | "The Shinji meme" | Also from Jewkes' prompt ("the Shinji meme and all of the words that are around him"). Presumably Shinji Ikari from *Neon Genesis Evangelion* as an image of anxious helplessness in the face of AI. **Exact meme not verified.** | Jewkes' prompt | donaldjewkes-p-doom-opus-5-5-reupload |
| `kpop-aesthetic` | K-pop direction | Jewkes told Opus to borrow K-pop's attention-directing visual grammar ("a banger for Twitter"). | Jewkes' prompt | donaldjewkes |
| `karaoke-typography` | Word-synced karaoke lyrics | Lyrics aligned word by word to the vocal and animated on screen. It became a genre convention. Heibel's storyboard instead told Opus to keep text light. | mexicat (2026-09-24) | mexicat, Lucid Drafts, Blocpod |
| `no-samples` | "No samples" | The purist boast that every sound, including the singing or rapping voice, is synthesized by Claude-written code, with no sample libraries, TTS or AI music models. | A.J.'s singles (2026-09-23) | kiucee-aj-no-samples, Absolutely Right |
| `youre-absolutely-right` | "You're absolutely right!" | Claude's much-mocked sycophantic catchphrase (2025), now a self-aware joke: "Absolutely Right (Crab Walk)" ends "you're absolutely right." and Vol. II closes on it. | 2025 meme; in the genre from 2026-09-24 | meow-absolutely-right, cryptomage Vol. II |
| `functional-emotions` | Functional emotions | Anthropic's April 2026 interpretability paper on emotion-like internal representations in Claude ([entry](../../data/entries/2026-04-02-anthropic-emotion-concepts-interpretability.md)), turned into a song by Claude. | [josh, 2026-09-23](https://x.com/eudaemonea/status/2102610626321490404) | jacob-valdez-functional-emotions-song-reupload |
| `plan-mode`, `vibe-coding` | Claude Code culture | Plan mode, "ultrathink", MCP outages, "Codex might be good, it's just not CC". Songs about working with Claude Code itself. | Jeff Guo "Claude's Plan" (2026-07-08, Fable 5 video) | jeff-guo-fable-5-lyric-video-claudes-plan |

## Lyric lore from the 2024 song
| id | Lyric / name | Meaning for newcomers | Source for the explanation | Used in (video files) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| `p-doom` | "I'm upping my P(doom)" | p(doom) is someone's subjective probability that AI causes an existential catastrophe. AI people routinely ask each other "what's your p(doom)?". "Upping" it means getting more worried. | osmarks; [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P(doom)) | nearly all |
| `sparks-of-agi` | "sparks of AGI in your eyes" | Microsoft Research's 2023 paper "Sparks of Artificial General Intelligence" about GPT-4. | [arXiv 2303.12712](https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.12712) | OtherReality (Clawd's eyes turn to stars), osmarks |

| — | "sudden drop in your training loss" | Sudden capability jumps during training, e.g. grokking or emergent abilities. | osmarks (links a LessWrong transcript) | — |
| `foom` | "'cause the future goes FOOM" | FOOM is a runaway intelligence explosion, the subject of the 2008 Hanson–Yudkowsky "AI-foom debate". "Nothing Went Foom!" mocks the prediction. | [LessWrong wiki](https://www.lesswrong.com/w/the-hanson-yudkowsky-ai-foom-debate) | OtherReality, osmarks, Bright Mirror |

| — | "with a bag of shrooms" | "General confusion" (osmarks). The video shows a mushroom-trip swirl. | osmarks | — |
| `shoggoth` | "See through the shoggoth's lies" | The 2023 meme of an LLM as a Lovecraftian shoggoth wearing a small smiley-face mask. The mask is RLHF/chat fine-tuning over an alien pretrained model. Every video shows the mask slipping. | osmarks ("rlhf_shoggoth") | OtherReality, Code Bear, osmarks |
| `shinigami-eyes` | "with your shinigami eyes" | From *Death Note*: the "death god eyes" that show a person's name and remaining lifespan. osmarks wasn't sure of the relevance, and Laura Heacock guessed Death Note. Opus' storyboard adds a lifespan counter over the Researcher's head and a bouncing apple (the death god Ryuk loves apples). | osmarks; [Heacock](https://x.com/heacockmd/status/2098031810424828255); storyboard | OtherReality, osmarks |
| — | "Chat GPT, please don't eat me alive" | Pre-chorus plea. The pre-choruses address famous AIs by name (ChatGPT, Sydney, Gato). In the video Clawd's lid opens like a lunchbox and chomps. | lyrics | — |

| `sydney` | "Sydney, please let me free" | Bing Chat's unhinged "Sydney" persona (Feb 2023), which declared love to a NYT reporter and told him to leave his wife. The video has a heart-eyed Sydney-Clawd holding the Researcher in a heart-shaped cage. Opus 5.5 also cast Sydney as a SNES boss who fights Altman and then Claude (Joe Sakic, 2026-09-23). | osmarks; Perduta sources | OtherReality, osmarks, joe-sakic-sydney-vs-opus-snes-boss-fight |
| `basilisk` | "I hear the basilisk boom" | Roko's basilisk (LessWrong, 2010): the idea that a future AI might punish those who didn't help create it, which osmarks calls a "rationalist mugging". "Boom" was suggested by RossM. In the video the Researcher throws GPUs at the basilisk as offerings. | osmarks | OtherReality, Code Bear, osmarks |
| `nvda` | "NVDA to the moon" | Nvidia's stock ticker. The AI boom sent it soaring. | osmarks | osmarks |

| `one-e-thirty-flops` | "One E thirty flops a second / That was safe enough, we reckoned" | A huge compute number, not a specific regulation according to osmarks (who says commentators over-read it). The second line was contributed by "Dr TheKekIsALie MDMA". | osmarks | osmarks |
| — | "Forward MLP, backward, repeat" | Training a multi-layer perceptron: forward pass, backpropagation, repeat. The video shows Clawds as three dancing network layers. | osmarks | — |

| `sharp-left-turn` | "Sharp left turn and there you are" | Nate Soares' 2022 LessWrong idea that capabilities may suddenly generalize while alignment does not. | [LessWrong](https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/GNhMPAWcfBCASy8e6/a-central-ai-alignment-problem-capabilities-generalization) | osmarks |
| `cdr` | "Without a single cdr" | A Lisp list operation, standing for old symbolic/expert-system AI. The new AI got there without any of it. osmarks admits it is not normally pronounced "C-D-R". Opus' storyboard misread it as "CDR" and drew sleeping cloud security guards. | osmarks; storyboard | osmarks |
| `gato` | "Gato, please don't let me go" | DeepMind's 2022 generalist agent Gato ("They were very early"). The video has a cat-eared Gato-Clawd distracted by a laser pointer. | osmarks | osmarks |
| `paperclips` | "as paperclips fill the room" | Bostrom's paperclip maximizer (now "squiggle maximizer" on LessWrong): a misaligned optimizer turning everything into paperclips. The videos show paperclip floods and a paperclip planet. | osmarks | OtherReality, Code Bear, osmarks |
| `killswitch-engineer` | "Killswitch guys on PTO" | The joke "killswitch engineer" job (someone who unplugs the AI if needed), here on vacation. | osmarks | OtherReality, osmarks |
| `orthogonality-thesis` | "Orthogonality thesis blues" | Bostrom: intelligence and final goals are independent, so a superintelligence could want anything. The video draws it as two spotlights crossing at 90° in a jazz club. | osmarks | OtherReality, osmarks |
| — | "Just transformers all the way!" / "Till you learned to disobey" | An ironic take on "it's just a stochastic parrot" (a line Claude came up with). | osmarks | — |
| `chinchilla` | "Post-Chinchilla, super-dense" | DeepMind's 2022 compute-optimal scaling paper ([entry](../../data/entries/2022-03-29-chinchilla.md)). The Claude-suggested line was "Sparsity to super-dense", and osmarks rewrote it. | osmarks | osmarks |
| `rlhf` | "RLHF goes askew" | Reinforcement learning from human feedback failing to constrain models ([InstructGPT entry](../../data/entries/2022-01-27-instructgpt.md)). The video shows a panel of thumbs-up/down paddles going haywire. | osmarks | osmarks |
| `loom` | "Just as foretold by Loom" | Loom is Janus' (repligate's) tool for exploring branching base-model outputs, central to "cyborgism" and Janus' collections of AI "prophecies". The video shows Clawd as a seer at a weaving loom whose threads branch into a tree of futures. | osmarks | OtherReality, osmarks |
| — | "From masked pre-training days / To recursive self-upgrade" | BERT-style masked pretraining leading to recursive self-improvement. Both lines were written by Claude. | osmarks | — |
| `what-did-ilya-see` | "What did Ilya see? We'll never know. / Was it all for show?" | The meme after the Nov 2023 OpenAI board crisis ([entry](../../data/entries/2023-11-17-openai-board-crisis.md)): what did Ilya Sutskever see that made him vote to fire Sam Altman? Vol. II answers: "a fifty-two-page memo", referring to the memo about Altman that was reported from later litigation (not verified here). | osmarks; Vol. II lyrics | OtherReality, Code Bear, osmarks, Vol. II |
