Anthropic's COBOL-modernization blog post sends IBM down 13%, its worst day since 2000

★★★businessAnthropicIBMconfidence: high

On Feb 23, 2026 Anthropic published a blog post and playbook saying Claude Code can automate the exploration, dependency-mapping and documentation work that makes COBOL modernization so costly, cutting timelines "from years to quarters". IBM, whose mainframe business depends on that complexity, closed down about 13.2% at $223.35, its worst one-day fall since October 2000, losing roughly $30B in market value.

Key facts

What happened

A product-marketing post about using Claude Code on legacy COBOL was read by investors as a threat to IBM's mainframe and consulting revenue, and IBM had one of its worst trading days in decades. IBM answered that rewriting code is the easy part of leaving the mainframe.

Why it matters

It is a clear early-2026 example of a frontier-lab announcement moving the share price of an incumbent software and services firm. Whether AI-assisted migration actually cuts mainframe revenue had not been shown at the time.
