Musk unveils ‘Macrohard’ / Digital Optimus, a joint Tesla–xAI computer-use agent with Grok as planner and a real-time Tesla model acting on screen video
Partly confirmed
The takeaway
On March 11, 2026 Elon Musk announced on X that “Macrohard or Digital Optimus” is a joint xAI–Tesla project: Grok plans, and a Tesla-built real-time model acts on the last 5 seconds of screen video and keyboard/mouse input, running on Tesla’s $650 AI4 computer.

Key facts
- Source: Musk’s X post of March 11, 2026 (about 47.9M views as of Oct 12, 2026); there is no Tesla or xAI technical document
- Musk: ‘Macrohard or Digital Optimus is a joint xAI-Tesla project, coming as part of Tesla’s investment agreement with xAI’
- Architecture per Musk: Grok is ‘the master conductor/navigator’; Digital Optimus is ‘processing and actioning the past 5 secs of real-time computer screen video and keyboard/mouse actions’
- Musk’s analogy: Digital Optimus is ‘System 1 (instinctive part of the mind)’ and Grok ‘System 2 (thinking part of the mind)’
- Hardware per Musk: ‘the super low cost Tesla AI4 ($650) paired with relatively frugal use of the much more expensive xAI Nvidia hardware’
- Musk: ‘In principle, it is capable of emulating the function of entire companies. That is why the program is called MACROHARD, a funny reference to Microsoft.’
- Background (Drive Tesla Canada): Tesla agreed to invest $2B in xAI earlier in 2026; xAI filed a US trademark application for ‘Macrohard’ in August 2025
- Oct 10, 2026, Musk on X (about 2.9M views): ‘Digital Optimus can play about halfway through the Diablo campaign so far just by looking at the screen like a human. Skill at Counter-Strike and other fast games is good too. League is also in training. Goal is to generalize across all games.’

What happened
Musk’s March 11, 2026 post is the only primary source for the project. He described a two-part system: Grok, “like a much more advanced and sophisticated version of turn-by-turn navigation software”, directs a fast Tesla model that watches the screen and produces keyboard and mouse actions. He claimed “it will be the only real-time smart AI system” and that “no other company can yet do this”. He gave no release date. Reuters and other outlets reported the post the same day (Reuters was read only through search summaries).
On October 10, 2026, replying to another X user, Musk wrote that the team is “making interesting progress”: Digital Optimus plays about halfway through “the Diablo campaign” by looking at the screen, is good at Counter-Strike “and other fast games”, and is being trained on “League”, with the goal “to generalize across all games”. He did not say which Diablo or League title, and published no video or score.
Why it matters
It is Musk’s answer to the computer-use agents of Anthropic, OpenAI and Google, built on a different design: a small real-time vision model on cheap in-car hardware with a large model as planner. Every capability claim so far is Musk’s own and unverified, which is why confidence is medium.
