DFRLab exposes 26 AI-generated YouTube 'news' channels that farmed ~1.8B views from war coverage
On March 23, 2026 the Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab reported a coordinated network of 26 YouTube channels that used synthetic anchors, text-to-speech narration, AI visuals and LLM-written scripts to post news-like geopolitical videos, mainly on Russia's war in Ukraine, with fabricated events mixed in. Together they had more than 1.8 billion lifetime views and almost 2 million subscribers.
Key facts
- Authors: Iryna Adam and Eto Buziashvili (DFRLab)
- 26 channels; 1,965,892 subscribers; 1.8B+ lifetime views (one channel alone exceeded 1B); 23 of 26 were still active on March 23, 2026
- Languages and audience: English and Russian, aimed at Russian speakers in Russia and Europe and English-speaking audiences in Europe and internationally
- Topics: mainly the Russia–Ukraine war, plus Armenia–Azerbaijan, Iran and US–Iran relations, Venezuela, and Poland-related claims
- Techniques: synthetic AI news anchors (5 channels), automated TTS, AI thumbnails, LLM scripts with leftover prompt artifacts in descriptions, near-duplicate videos across channels, news-outlet-like names, synchronized posting
- Videos carried ads (ad-eligible), though YouTube Partner Program enrollment could not be confirmed; some channels disappeared during the research while similar new ones appeared
- Active from summer 2025 to March 2026; several channels were older accounts (created as early as 2007) repurposed
What happened
DFRLab documented a low-cost, AI-run "news" operation on YouTube that reached a very large audience. AI anchors and LLM scripts let a small network publish large volumes of plausible commentary, with fabricated events inserted from time to time, and earn ad revenue from it.
Why it matters
It shows that generative AI has made "slop news" both profitable and politically useful at scale on a mainstream platform. The report came during the 2026 Iran war, which brought its own wave of AI-generated war footage.
