Anthropic says it has never advocated a ban on open-weights models, after Jensen Huang's industry letter

★★★after cutoffpolicy-safetyAnthropicNVIDIAconfidence: high

On July 27, 2026 Dario Amodei published "Our position on open-weights models", stating that Anthropic has never advocated banning open-weights models as a category. It came days after an open letter organised by Nvidia's Jensen Huang, signed by Meta, Microsoft, Mistral, Hugging Face and others, urged policymakers to avoid "premature restrictions" on open-weight AI. Anthropic had not signed, and critics including David Sacks accused it of using safety to protect its business. Amodei instead proposed chip export controls, curbs on industrial-scale distillation, and mandatory safety testing for all sufficiently capable models, open and closed.

Key facts

What happened

In late July 2026 the US debate over open-weight AI turned on Anthropic. Most large AI companies had signed Jensen Huang's letter defending open-weight models, Anthropic had not, and the company was accused of trying to restrict open models, including Chinese ones, for competitive reasons. Amodei's post answered this. He separated open weights as such, which he does not oppose, from the national-security risk of authoritarian states overtaking the US, which he says depends on chips and distillation rather than on licensing.

Why it matters

The post is Anthropic's formal position in the main mid-2026 policy split, and later debates refer back to it: the Amodei–Baker–Sacks exchange in August and "Pacing the Frontier" in September. It also links Anthropic's anti-distillation work to its export-control advocacy.

Unverified: the exact signatory list of the Huang letter and its date were taken from TechCrunch's "on Friday" wording, not from the letter itself.
