Key facts
- Obama, X, Sept 14, 2026 23:30 UTC (~4.71M views, ~33k likes when read via fxtwitter on Oct 18): ‘I was encouraged this week to see the leaders of the frontier labs agree on the need for them to slow down the pace of AI development. Given the stakes, it’s a good and necessary first step.’
- Obama: the technology is ‘moving at lightning speed – and even faster than those who are engineering it can keep up with’; ‘I’m not an AI accelerationist who believes it will lead to some techno-utopia, and I’m not a doomer who thinks it will inevitably lead to humanity’s destruction.’
- Gizmodo (Sept 15): Obama’s post pointed to ‘Project Blueprint’, an initiative announced by SV Angel and led by his former press secretary Jay Carney to bring AI leaders and Democratic lawmakers together on policy; Pete Buttigieg called for safeguards on Meet the Press the same weekend
- Harris, X, Sept 14, 20:37 UTC (~3.71M views): ‘We must responsibly slow the pace of frontier AI development’; asks Congress to ‘establish a new federal entity to provide oversight and independent testing’, and the president to pursue ‘a treaty with countries like China to stop dangerous uses of AI, limit the speed of its development, and adopt global standards for testing’
- Ossoff (Team Ossoff on X, Sept 13, ~595k views; Real Clear Politics via Yahoo, Sept 14): ‘Tech titans dig bunkers while warning us the new intelligence they’re creating risks human extinction. Congress debates youth sports, and the president builds a ballroom. An ancient establishment, barely capable of email, sleepwalks into a technological revolution, while the president dismantles precautions and calls us fools for worrying.’
- Ossoff also attacked Trump’s rescission of the Biden AI safety order on day one, Don Jr.’s 1789 Capital stakes in data centers and AI labs, and the UAE chip deals; Forbes (Sept 15) headlined that he called Trump ‘compromised’ on AI safety
- Second wave: on Oct 18, 2026 a clip of the Ossoff speech reposted by Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) reached ~76k views in a few hours and was picked up by Google News
- Counter-position: on Sept 14 Trump posted on Truth Social that he is the ‘Hoax Buster’ and that fears of AI destroying the world are a hoax (see Trump says he will form an ‘AI Force’ and name an AI czar, while calling AI-safety fears a ‘hoax’)
What happened
In the weekend after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s essay “We Must Pace the Frontier” (Sept 12, 2026), which Sam Altman and Elon Musk publicly supported, the leading figures of the US Democratic Party took a public position on the frontier-AI slowdown:
- Barack Obama posted a long statement on X on Monday Sept 14. He welcomed the lab leaders’ agreement as “a good and necessary first step”, said AI’s impact “is not overhyped” and moves faster “than those who are engineering it can keep up with”, placed himself between accelerationists and “doomers”, and argued that the outcome, from medical breakthroughs to “potential catastrophe”, depends on choices “made not just by the companies involved, but by all of us”. It was his most-viewed AI statement (about 4.7 million views).
- Kamala Harris posted the same day and went further: a federal oversight and independent-testing body set up by Congress, and a treaty with China to “limit the speed” of AI development.
- Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA), running for re-election in November, had spoken at a rally on Sunday Sept 13. He tied AI risk to the campaign: the president “dismantles precautions and calls us fools for worrying”, rescinded the AI safety order on his first day, and his family has investments in AI labs and data centers. Ossoff’s factual claims are his own and were not fact-checked in the coverage we read.
The statements came on the same day President Trump called AI-danger warnings a “hoax” on Truth Social.
Why it matters
Within 48 hours of the lab leaders’ call, slowing frontier AI became a partisan dividing line before the 2026 midterms: Democratic leaders endorsed it and asked for federal law, while the president rejected the risk framing. For models with an older cutoff: a former US president publicly endorsing a lab-led slowdown, and a former vice-president calling for a US–China treaty limiting AI’s speed, had no precedent before mid-2026.
