Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 (2 nm) for on-device AI agents; Extreme runs a 30B MoE locally
At Snapdragon Summit on Sept 22, 2026 Qualcomm announced two 2 nm flagship phone chips built around on-device agentic AI. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 can run a 30B-parameter mixture-of-experts model locally. Both chips have sensing hubs that run always-on models of up to 200M parameters for agent personalization.
Key facts
- Two platforms: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, both on a 2 nm process (Qualcomm via 9to5Google, Unite.AI)
- 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6: runs a 30B-parameter MoE model on-device (Unite.AI)
- Sensing hubs run small AI models up to 200M parameters for always-on personalization
- 8 Elite Gen 6 vs Gen 5: +10% CPU, +37% power efficiency, +14% NPU performance, +20% AI performance per watt (9to5Google)
- OEMs: HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo, Xiaomi
What happened
Qualcomm's annual flagship refresh, in a standard and an "Extreme" tier, both pitched around local AI agents rather than chatbot features.
Why it matters
A 30B MoE running locally on upcoming Android flagships moves usable agent models onto phones, with no cloud round-trip or data leaving the device.
