Pope Leo XIV makes AI the theme of addresses to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences (Sept 24) and UNESCO in Paris (Sept 25)
In two speeches days before his "not fake news" remarks, Pope Leo XIV warned about AI. On Sept 24, 2026 he told the Pontifical Academy of Sciences that AI "can be used for surveillance, manipulation and discrimination" and that autonomous weapons without human oversight bring "new dangers to security and international peace". On Sept 25 he gave the first papal address at UNESCO's Paris headquarters since John Paul II in 1980, lamenting that "intelligence" is attributed to machines while the dignity of unproductive people is "discarded".
Key facts
- Sept 24, Pontifical Academy of Sciences plenary ('The Future of Science in a Changing World'): 'Artificial intelligence can be used for surveillance, manipulation and discrimination'; 'Sophisticated cyber capabilities and autonomous weapons may, when developed or deployed without adequate safeguards and human oversight, introduce new dangers to security and international peace'
- Same speech: 'current AI systems require enormous amounts of energy and water, significantly influencing carbon dioxide emissions'; technological advance 'must therefore be accompanied by a corresponding growth in responsibility'
- Sept 25, UNESCO Paris (start of his four-day France trip), at the 'UNESCO Forum for Youth in the Digital Age': 'while intelligence is attributed to computational systems, we struggle to recognize the inalienable dignity of human persons, whose lives are judged according to the criterion of efficiency and, when deemed no longer productive, are rejected and discarded'
- UNESCO address: AI 'cannot answer questions that concern the meaning of human life'; 'technology must remain at the service of the human person, rather than becoming yet another instrument of domination and injustice'; he warned of a 'corruption of culture' and said AI amplifies false information
- AP (Sept 24) framed the week as the Pope putting AI risk 'at the heart of his papacy'; on Sept 25, Peter Thiel called him a 'useful idiot' for the CCP over the AI encyclical (separate entry)
What happened
Leo XIV spent the last week of September talking about AI: to scientists at the Vatican, to UNESCO in Paris, to reporters on the flight
home (2026-09-28-pope-leo-rebukes-huang-ai-risk) and then to artists (2026-10-02-pope-leo-ai-art-spark-of-humanity).
Why it matters
The speeches show where the Vatican is pressing: surveillance, autonomous weapons, energy use, misinformation and human dignity, rather than pausing AI. Together with the May encyclical they made the Pope the most prominent non-industry voice in the AI-risk debate.
