Mistral AI opens a Munich hub for Physics AI and Industrial AI, with TUM, BMW and Siemens Energy
On Sept 28, 2026 Mistral AI announced a Munich hub ("Hallo, Deutschland!") with research teams for Physics AI and Industrial AI and applied engineers for German enterprise customers. Partners include a TUM project using its wind tunnels to build automotive-aerodynamics digital twins, BMW (crash simulation and engineering AI) and Siemens Energy. The hub is built around the ~30 CFD and multiphysics specialists from Emmi AI, which Mistral acquired in May 2026.
Key facts
- Teams: specialized Physics AI and Industrial AI research groups plus applied engineers embedded with enterprise partners (Mistral)
- Partners: Technical University of Munich (wind-tunnel data for aerodynamics digital twins), BMW (crash simulations, engineering AI), Siemens Energy; SAP named as a German partner (Mistral, Unite.AI)
- Emmi AI (Austria), acquired May 2026, brings 30+ physicists and engineers in computational fluid dynamics and multiphysics simulation (Mistral)
- Mistral restates a plan for 1 GW of European compute capacity by 2030 and pitches open-weight models running on customer infrastructure under European law
- Arthur Mensch: 'Germany's industrial base is the backbone of Europe's economy. This is where we build.' German digital minister Karsten Wildberger and Bavarian minister Florian Herrmann welcomed the move
What happened
Mistral's first major German site focuses on simulation-heavy engineering, building on the Emmi AI acquisition, rather than on sales alone.
Why it matters
It shows Europe's leading frontier lab specializing in industrial and physics AI for EU manufacturers, where "sovereign" deployment of open weights on customer infrastructure is its main selling point against US labs.
