DeepSeek releases Harness v0.2 preview with desktop apps for macOS and Windows (open-source MIT agent platform)

★★★after cutoffagentsDeepSeekconfidence: high

On Sept 30, 2026 DeepSeek released the v0.2 preview of DeepSeek Harness, its MIT-licensed, plugin-based agent platform, now with desktop apps for macOS (Apple silicon) and Windows. It handles documents, spreadsheets, coding and scheduled automation, and is DeepSeek's answer to desktop agents such as Claude Cowork and the Codex app. Its X Article drew ~700k views and the release reached the Hacker News front page (253 points).

Key facts

What happened

DeepSeek shipped desktop builds of Harness, its open-source agent "harness". A release candidate had already appeared on GitHub around Sept 28. The v0.2 preview adds a plugin manager, scheduled automation, file and code-change previews, and settings for how much agent detail is shown.

Why it matters

DeepSeek is moving from models and a chat app into agent products, in the same space as Claude Cowork/Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex app. Like its models, the product is open source under MIT, and it runs on DeepSeek's own models.
