Hegseth announces a four-star Autonomous Warfare Command (via Project Agincourt) and Project Meridian led by Musk, Luckey and Gingrich
In a "State of the Force" address at Marine Corps Base Quantico on Sept 30, 2026, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a new four-star Autonomous Warfare Command (AutoWarCom), targeted for Oct 1, 2027. Its interim step is Project Agincourt, led by DIU director Owen West and SEAL Senior Chief Max Strasiser. He also announced Project Meridian, a 120-day study of future warfare co-led by Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey and Newt Gingrich under Pentagon CTO Emil Michael.
Key facts
- Venue: Hegseth's 'State of the Force' address at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, Sept 30, 2026, one of six announced initiatives
- AutoWarCom: a new command with 'service-like authorities' for rapid adoption of autonomous and robotic systems across the joint force, a four-star commander, target date Oct 1, 2027 (DefenseScoop, Military Times)
- Hegseth: 'The autonomous and robotic revolution has enormous implications for equipment, doctrine, organization, and assumptions.'
- Project Agincourt: a one-year interim effort to prototype 'warfighting acquisition', bringing operators, engineers and companies into rapid development cycles. Led by Defense Innovation Unit director Owen West ('strategic risk, resources, and scale') and Navy SEAL Senior Chief Max Strasiser ('operational problem-solving')
- Project Meridian: co-led by Elon Musk (SpaceXAI), Palmer Luckey (Anduril) and Newt Gingrich, overseen by Pentagon CTO Emil Michael. It will 'study the battlefields of the future' 'from under the Earth to beyond the moon' (AI, autonomy, directed energy, robotics, biotechnology) and report within 120 days, followed by a public rollout
- TechCrunch noted possible conflicts of interest: SpaceX launches government satellites, and Anduril recently won contracts for long-range missiles, semi-autonomous fighter aircraft and Army intelligence hardware
What happened
Hegseth used a major address to the force to reorganize the US military around autonomy. He created a path to a dedicated combatant-level command for drones, robots and AI-enabled systems, with an interim acquisition experiment named after the 1415 battle. He also put two defense-tech founders and a former House Speaker in charge of a fast study of future warfare.
Why it matters
It is the clearest institutional commitment yet by the US military to autonomous weapons at scale, made while the Pentagon is fighting Anthropic in court over Anthropic's refusal to allow autonomous-weapons uses. It also returns Musk to a formal government role with direct influence over procurement in areas where his companies compete.
