Quinnipiac poll: 77% of Americans favor slowing (47%) or stopping (30%) powerful AI development; 73% fear AI could threaten human survival
A Quinnipiac University poll of 1,202 US adults (Sept 24–27, 2026, released Sept 30) found 77% favor slowing or stopping the development of powerful AI until its safety is assessed, 86% back independent safety standards even if they slow development, 73% worry future AI could threaten human survival and 72% would oppose an AI data center in their community. It was one of several September polls showing AI safety becoming a mainstream political issue.
Key facts
- Slow development of frontier systems while safety is assessed 47%, stop altogether 30%, keep current pace 14%, go faster 5%
- 86% support independent safety standards for AI companies even if development slows; 91% say US guardrails are important; 81% put safety ahead of staying at the forefront (14%)
- 73% very (38%) or somewhat (35%) concerned that future AI could threaten human survival; 53% expect more harm than good
- 74% have little or no trust in AI company leaders; 69% still say keeping pace with China is important
- 72% oppose an AI data center in their community (65% in March); 21% support (24% in March)
- Method: 1,202 US adults, Sept 24–27, 2026, ±3.5 points
- Other September polls: CBS News/YouGov (Sept 16–18) found a majority for slowing but not halting AI; Polymarket's post on the Quinnipiac result had ~210k views on X
What happened
Quinnipiac asked a national sample about the pace of AI development, safety rules, existential risk and local data centers. Its release quoted Tamilla Triantoro: "Americans are not convinced AI's advances are in their interests."
Why it matters
Clear majorities for slowing frontier AI, for independent safety standards and against local data centers give politicians a reason to campaign on AI risk ahead of the 2026 midterms, while industry-funded groups spend heavily on the other side.
