arXiv limits submitters to two papers a month as AI-fuelled submissions hit 40,363 in September 2026

★★★after cutoffresearcharXivconfidence: high

On Oct 1, 2026 arXiv capped every submitter at two submissions per calendar month and three active submissions at a time. Monthly submissions doubled in two years, from 20,569 in September 2024 to 40,363 in September 2026, and arXiv cited a rise in thin, "salami" and "dense, AI-written" papers that consume moderator time.

Key facts

What happened

arXiv announced on Oct 1 that every submitter may post at most two papers per calendar month and hold at most three active submissions. The preprint server said submissions had nearly doubled in two years, and that a small group of authors posting many low-quality, often AI-written papers was taking up a disproportionate share of volunteer moderators' time.

Why it matters

arXiv is the main preprint channel for AI, physics and mathematics, and it is also where AI-assisted proofs and results now appear first. This is the first hard, server-wide quota it has imposed because of AI-scale paper production. The cap applies only to the submitter, and readers immediately asked whether prolific groups will simply rotate submitters (e.g. a widely seen reply on X).
