PewDiePie unveils Ajax, an 'uncensored' local 9B agent model, and says OpenAI banned him twice, once for distillation
In a YouTube video posted Oct 1, 2026 ("I seriously should NOT be dropping this."), Felix "PewDiePie" Kjellberg presented Ajax, a Qwen3.5-9B fine-tune with refusals ablated, built as the always-on agent for his self-hosted Odysseus workspace. He said OpenAI banned his account twice while he built it, once explicitly for "distillation" after he used reasoning outputs from an OpenAI model as training data. A post about it reached ~2.1M views on X. OpenAI has not commented.
Key facts
- Ajax: fine-tuned Qwen3.5-9B for web search and browsing, email, calendar and notes inside Odysseus (his open-source, self-hosted AI workspace from May 2026); runs on consumer GPUs or Macs
- Bans (his account): first ban appealed and reversed, then banned again; the OpenAI email he shows cites 'distillation'. He says he used chain-of-thought outputs from OpenAI's Sol model; 'How did they even know?'
- As of Oct 2 the 'Download Ajax here' link led to a 'coming soon' page asking users to contribute training data, not to model files
- A same-name Solana memecoin ($Ajax) appeared about a minute after the video; no link to Kjellberg established
- Reach: @interesting_aIl post ~2.1M views; @MTSlive ~407k
- Comes a day after OpenAI publicly described disrupting a coordinated, Moonshot-linked distillation campaign
What happened
The world's best-known solo YouTuber released a video introducing his own fine-tuned local model for his open-source agent workspace, and recounted being banned by OpenAI for distilling its model's reasoning into training data. The model files were not yet downloadable on Oct 2.
Why it matters
It brings the distillation fight between frontier labs and open-model builders, until now about Chinese labs, to a mass audience, and shows how detectable distillation-style use of APIs has become. The ban reasons are his account; OpenAI has not confirmed them (confidence medium).
