SpaceXAI turns into an AI cloud provider: talks with Microsoft on leasing capacity, on top of Anthropic and Google contracts

★★★after cutoffhardware-computeSpaceXAISpaceXMicrosoftAnthropicGoogleconfidence: medium

The Information reported on Oct 2, 2026 that SpaceX's AI unit (SpaceXAI, ex-xAI) held talks over the summer with Microsoft about leasing it computing capacity, and that it has "lined up billions of dollars a month in commitments from compute-hungry AI labs". Earlier reporting (Fortune, July) put Anthropic at $1.25B a month for ~325,000 Nvidia GPUs and Google at $920M a month for ~110,000 GPUs, both cancellable on 90 days' notice. Musk had initially resisted renting out compute.

Key facts

What happened

SpaceXAI, which still trains Grok, now earns much of its AI revenue by renting Colossus capacity to rival labs and hyperscalers.

Why it matters

A frontier lab acting as a neocloud for its competitors (Anthropic, Google, possibly Microsoft) shows how scarce compute has become, and blurs the line between AI labs and infrastructure providers.
