Anthropic asks Claude users to opt in to sharing voice recordings for model training
Around Oct 4, 2026 Claude users began seeing a prompt in voice mode asking: "Allow us to use your voice data to improve our AI models." A new toggle under Settings > Privacy covers audio recordings and voice chat data from approved sessions. It is off by default, separate from the existing setting for training on chats and Claude Code sessions, and users can switch it off and delete the voice data later.
Key facts
- Prompt text (BleepingComputer, Oct 4): 'Allow us to use your voice data to improve our AI models. Audio recordings and voice chat data help improve how Anthropic AI models understand and respond to speech.' Options: Allow / Not now
- Settings > Privacy: 'Allow us to use your voice data': 'For approved sessions, allow the use of your audio recordings and voice chat data to improve Anthropic AI models'
- Disabled by default and independent of the chat/coding-session training setting introduced in Anthropic's Aug 2025 consumer-terms update
- No Anthropic blog post or retention period for voice data was found as of Oct 4; BleepingComputer's report is based on the in-app prompt and a screenshot on X
What happened
Anthropic added a separate, opt-in consent for using voice-mode audio as training data, alongside the existing setting for text chats.
Why it matters
Voice recordings are biometric-adjacent data. Making the consent opt-in and separate from chat data is a stricter default than the 2025 change for chats, and it suggests Anthropic wants real speech data to improve Claude's voice models.
