a16z's 7th Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps: ChatGPT has 3x the US subscribers of Claude or Gemini; top 1% of payers drive 19.5% of spend

★★after cutoffbusinessAndreessen Horowitzconfidence: high

On Oct 5, 2026 a16z (Olivia Moore) published the 7th edition of its Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps. ChatGPT leads web traffic by about 2x over Gemini and mobile users by 2.5x, and has 3x as many US paying subscribers as Claude or Gemini. Only 4.5% of US consumers pay for one of the three. The top 1% of spenders account for 19.5% of observed consumer AI spending, and personal agents (Muse, Instinct) were the new trend.

Key facts

What happened

a16z's twice-yearly ranking combines web traffic, mobile monthly users and, for the first time on this scale, consumer spending data. It found the consumer market concentrating: few new apps break in, a small group of heavy spenders pays a large share, and Claude's consumer base is small but spends more per head.

Why it matters

It is one of the few public, cross-app measures of consumer AI use. It also gives early numbers on personal agents, the product category that grew fastest in autumn 2026.
