Anthropic launches in-country Claude inference in India via Amazon Bedrock
On Oct 5, 2026 Anthropic said Claude requests sent to an India endpoint on Amazon Bedrock are now processed on servers in India. This meets data-residency needs of Indian banks, insurers, government bodies and large enterprises. It delivers on an August 2026 promise by Anthropic India MD Irina Ghose. Reliance and CRED tested it in private preview.
Key facts
- Models listed in Indian press: Claude Opus 5, Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Haiku 4.5. The 5.5 models are not mentioned; not checked against AWS docs
- Irina Ghose (MD, Anthropic India): 'In August, we committed to bringing Claude inference to India, and we are delivering on that promise' and 'Our customers, especially in regulated sectors and government, want to use Claude on their most critical work, with requests processed in the country.'
- Private-preview customers: Reliance, CRED and others; Indian press lists Claude users including Kotak, Axis, IndusInd, NPCI, TCS (50,000 associates), Infosys, Cognizant, Swiggy, Godrej and Freshworks
- Partner push: first Claude Certification for Partners held in Bengaluru (Aug 2026), aiming to certify up to ~5,000 people (afaqs, CRN Asia)
What happened
Anthropic and AWS made India-resident Claude inference generally available on Bedrock. We did not find an anthropic.com or AWS post for the launch, so the details come from Indian trade press that appears to work from an Anthropic release.
Why it matters
India is one of Claude's largest markets, and data-residency rules have kept regulated sectors from production use. Local inference is part of the sovereign-AI push that competing labs (OpenAI, Google) are also making in India.
