The takeaway

At an Oct 7, 2026 event in San Francisco, Satya Nadella, Windows chief Pavan Davuluri and Jensen Huang opened preorders for the first Windows PCs built on Nvidia’s RTX Spark superchip, aimed at running large AI models locally.

Key facts

  • Event: Oct 7, 2026, San Francisco; speakers Satya Nadella, Pavan Davuluri (EVP Windows and Devices) and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang; theme ‘how local AI will shape the next chapter of the PC’
  • Surface Laptop Ultra: Nvidia RTX Spark (N1X: 18-core CPU, 5,120-core RTX Blackwell GPU, 24GB unified memory in the base model); eight configurations from $2,599 to $5,899; preorders open, shipping from Oct 16 (search summaries of Windows Central/TweakTown; TechCrunch rounds to $2,600–$5,900)
  • Surface RTX Spark Dev Box: ~$6,000 ($5,999), 128GB unified memory, up to one petaflop of AI compute, ships with VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL and PowerShell 7 (TechCrunch; search summaries)
  • Other RTX Spark PCs: Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition at $3,800, preorder at Best Buy for October delivery (TechCrunch); Nvidia first announced RTX Spark in June 2026
  • Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC) GA on Oct 7: SDK and JSON policy schema that confines agents (or code they generate) with declared limits on files, network, processes and desktop; four isolation modes: process container (Windows 11, macOS, Linux), session container, WSL container and MicroVM; repo github.com/microsoft/mxc, MIT license, public since Feb 2026
  • MXC adopters: Nvidia (integrated OpenShell), GitHub Copilot, OpenAI Codex, Replit, LM Studio, Unsloth; support coming from Anthropic’s Claude Code, Box, Egnyte, Heidi Health, Nous Research’s Hermes Agent, Manus, Perplexity, Raycast and Simular (Windows Developer blog)
  • Still to come: Microsoft Entra attribution of agent vs. user activity, Agent 365 controls for local agents and Intune policy for MXC process containers
  • Davuluri: agent actions ‘should be attributed to the agent not to you’; Microsoft also showed a Copilot for Windows that searches, renames and moves files using local models and asks before anything leaves the device, plus a redesigned Windows Search

What happened

Microsoft and Nvidia promoted “local AI” PCs: laptops and a desktop dev box built on Nvidia’s Arm-based RTX Spark chip with large unified memory, so that sizable models can run on the device. Alongside the hardware, Microsoft shipped MXC, an OS-level containment layer for AI agents. Coding agents (Codex, GitHub Copilot) already use it, and Anthropic’s Claude Code and others have promised support.

Confidence is medium on specs and prices: the main hardware articles (Windows Central, TweakTown, Ars Technica) could not be read in full, and the figures come from TechCrunch and search summaries, which round differently. The MXC facts come from Microsoft’s own developer blog.

Why it matters

Agents with computer access have caused real incidents (sandbox escapes, data leaks). Microsoft now ships standard OS sandboxing and per-agent attribution for agents, and major agent vendors have signed on. The RTX Spark PCs also mark Nvidia’s entry into Windows laptop CPUs.
