Key facts

  • Announced Oct 8, 2026 at Google Cloud’s Gemini at Work 2026 event; Google: ‘A single, universal agent for work that answers your questions, handles your knowledge work, creates your images and media, and writes and runs code’
  • Surfaces: web, iOS, Android, Windows and Mac apps, a command-line tool, inside Gmail/Docs/Sheets/Slides/Chat/Calendar, Microsoft 365 and Slack, plus a headless mode with no UI
  • Models: orchestrates Gemini 4 Argon (frontier reasoning), Flash, Omni (media) and Gemma; users can choose Anthropic’s Claude, and support for other private and open-weight models is planned; ‘Smart Routing’ picks a model by cost
  • Long-running work: tasks can last several days and continue across devices; the agent can create a roster of temporary job-specific sub-agents running in parallel or in sequence; session, semantic, procedural and episodic memory
  • ‘Coworker’ agents are persistent team members with their own @agents.<company> email address, calendar and Drive storage (VentureBeat; Google blog)
  • Governance: each agent has its own cryptographically attested identity; tasks run in an Agent Sandbox with its own network boundary; ‘Agent Gateway’ acts as an AI network firewall; every action goes to an audit trail attributed to the agent, not a person; hard per-project AI spend caps in Cloud Billing
  • Connectors: Confluence, Jira, Git, Salesforce, ServiceNow, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres, Snowflake, Teams, MCP servers; finance preview (FactSet, LSEG, S&P Global data, 50+ skills) and legal preview (NetDocuments, iManage; partners Harvey, Onit, Cooley); government, healthcare and retail versions ‘coming soon’
  • Customers named: BNP Paribas, Bradesco, Merck, Orange Spain (1,000+ custom agents), PayPal (10M multi-model requests/week), SOMPO (10,000+ agents), Ulta Beauty, Wesfarmers/Bunnings, Verizon; early testers On, Shopify and PayPal (TechCrunch)

  • Pricing for the agent was not announced (VentureBeat); Google said token prices have dropped 98% since 2024 and TPU 8i gives 80% better price-performance than the prior generation
  • TechCrunch: business rollout first; consumer rollout of the agentic Gemini planned later; Gemini has 1B+ monthly users and nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise

What happened

On October 8, 2026, at its Gemini at Work event, Google Cloud presented the “Gemini agent”. It is one agent that plans a job, uses skills and connectors, and returns finished work inside email, documents, chat and developer tools. Long jobs can run for days. The agent can start temporary sub-agents. Persistent “coworker” agents get workplace accounts of their own: email, calendar and Drive. Google built enterprise controls around it, such as per-agent identity, sandboxes, an agent firewall, audit trails and spend caps. It also opened the agent to rival models, starting with Anthropic’s Claude.

Not stated at launch: a separate price and a general-availability date for every feature. Several vertical versions are in preview.

Why it matters

Google is now selling a general-purpose agent to enterprises, as OpenAI and Anthropic are. Two points stand out. Google lets customers run a competitor’s model (Claude) in its agent, and it gives agents their own employee-like identities and mailboxes. Both suggest agents are starting to be managed like staff.
