Hopf’s Euler characteristic conjecture proved under T³ symmetry
The first proof came from ChatGPT-6-Astra ‘with minimal human input’

Importance: major (4 of 5)The takeaway
The symmetry needed for Hopf’s 1930s conjecture drops from a 4-torus to a 3-torus; the paper says the starting proof of its main theorem was obtained with GPT-6 Astra.

Key facts
- Paper: ‘The Hopf conjecture with T³-symmetry’, Jan Nienhaus & Dennis Wulle, arXiv 2610.22173 [math.DG], 15 Oct 2026
- Theorem A: a closed positively curved manifold of even dimension with an effective isometric T³-action has χ(M) > 0. Theorem B: each fixed-point component has the rational cohomology ring of S^f, CP^(f/2), HP^(f/4) or S² × HP^((f−2)/4); also proved for orbifolds
- Context: Hopf (1930s) conjectured χ > 0 for all even-dimensional positively curved manifolds; the Grove symmetry program proved it under ever smaller torus actions; Nienhaus’s 2022 paper (arXiv 2211.13151) needed T⁴. The authors call the new result ‘a capstone for … the 4-periodicity program’
- AI disclosure (quoted): ‘The starting point for this paper was a proof of Theorem A obtained with OpenAI’s ChatGPT-6-Astra and minimal human input, using the c1-approach outlined in Appendix A. This proves vanishing of the odd cohomology of the fixed point components, but no additional structure. The alternative p1-route was discovered interactively … The observations that the new route allows for structure results on the cohomology of fixed point components and the generalization to orbifolds are fully human … This document contains no machine-generated text.’
- Footnote on the general conjecture: ‘There has been an announcement of a counterexample to the Hopf conjecture in dimension 6, but to the knowledge of the authors this work is entirely AI and not verified by geometers’
What happened
Heinz Hopf conjectured in the 1930s that every even-dimensional closed manifold of positive sectional curvature has positive Euler characteristic. The general case is out of reach, so since the 1990s geometers have proved it under symmetry assumptions, needing smaller and smaller torus actions. In 2022 Jan Nienhaus proved it for isometric T⁴-actions.
On 15 Oct 2026 Nienhaus and Dennis Wulle posted arXiv 2610.221731, which needs only a T³-action and also covers orbifolds. Their Theorem B gives more: the fixed-point components have the rational cohomology of a sphere, a complex or quaternionic projective space, or S² × HP. The authors call this “a capstone” of the 4-periodicity approach used in all major work on the problem in the last 25 years.
The AI disclosure says the first proof of Theorem A came from ChatGPT-6-Astra “with minimal human input” (the “c1-approach” in Appendix A). A second route was found “interactively”, and the structure results and the orbifold extension are “fully human”. The paper “contains no machine-generated text”. A footnote mentions an announced AI counterexample to the Hopf conjecture in dimension 6 that, as far as the authors know, is “not verified by geometers”. The paper does not say who announced it, and we have not identified it (open lead).

Why it matters
It is a step in a well-known geometric program, done by its main experts, where the main theorem was first proved by a model. It also shows specialists treating unverified AI-generated claims (the dimension-6 counterexample) with open caution while using AI-generated proofs they can check.
