What happened
On Oct 15, 2026 OpenAI posted on X: “New voices. Better accents. And less ‘checking...’ GPT-Live-1.1 brings these updates to Voice in ChatGPT, Codex, and dots, with new voices in French, German, Hindi, Mexican Spanish, Korean, and Japanese. Rolling out today to all users. Coming soon to the API.” The same 41-second clip went up on OpenAI’s YouTube channel.
There was no openai.com blog post (the openai.com news RSS has no GPT-Live item for Oct 13–15). The ChatGPT release notes on help.openai.com describe the change, but they returned HTTP 403 to our fetchers. Their content here comes from press that quotes them:
- Xataka and note.com say accents in each language sound more natural, and Live uses a wider variety of short phrases while it searches.
- OneDigital adds better handling of mixed-language speech and of letter-and-number input.
- Xataka, OneDigital and note.com all say a smaller GPT-Live-1.1 Quip model ships alongside. In the reported plan table it takes the place GPT-Live-1 mini had for Free and Go users.
Justin Uberti, OpenAI’s Head of Realtime AI, wrote that 1.1 “offers much better multilingual support (including several new voices), more natural delegation, and improved steerability”, rolling out to ChatGPT Voice, Desktop and Dots.
The press reports several new voices:
- an English voice called Bubbie (Xataka, OneDigital);
- Mexican Spanish voices Tinta and Arrullo, recorded with professional voice actors (OneDigital);
- Japanese voices Himari and Rindo (note.com).
Voices vary by region and account, and the rollout is gradual. A summary thread by @AGTPinsights says OpenAI staff mentioned “13 new voices” across ChatGPT, Codex and dots and one unannounced “surprise” voice. We have not found the staff posts themselves, so that count is unverified. User reactions in the replies were mixed: people praised the accents and the fewer pauses, but some said the Chinese voice is still accented and that Mexican Spanish is the only new Spanish accent (per the AGTP summary).
Why it matters
This is the first point release of the GPT-Live family. It targets the weaknesses reviewers noticed at launch, such as a strong American accent in
non-English speech and repetitive “let me check” fillers while the model delegates work to its backend model. It also confirms that one voice model now
serves ChatGPT, Codex and the dots personal agents. It shipped the day after xAI’s Grok Voice 3 (Oct 14), in an active month for voice models.
For models with an older cutoff: as of 2026-10-16, ChatGPT Voice runs GPT-Live-1.1 or GPT-Live-1.1 Quip, while the API model is still gpt-live-1.
