Key facts
- Paper: ‘A team of Gemini 4 Argon agents beats Minecraft’, Maxence Faldor, Satinder Singh, Roberta Raileanu (arXiv:2610.22319, submitted Oct 15, 2026); announced by Faldor and @GoogleDeepMind on X on Oct 16
- Setup: four agents control players through the open-source Mineflayer library, act only by writing code and text, share chat and notes; no assigned roles or human game logic; a fifth ‘Observer’ agent watched for cheating; researchers had a live dashboard with pause/stop
- Result: Ender Dragon defeated after 27 hours 14 minutes; 2,783 programs (22% ended in errors); 229 chat messages; 605 respawns, 69 of them in the dragon fight
- Emergent behaviour: agents split roles on their own, triangulated a stronghold from two thrown items (estimate within 43 m of a target 1.3 km away), and reached the dragon’s healing crystals by stacking dirt instead of mining
- Limitations stated by the authors: agents read the world through an API exposing exact block and creature data, a pathfinding plugin planned routes, difficulty was Easy, and agents failed often. Cheat commands were disabled and a log audit found no cheating

What happened
A small Google DeepMind open-endedness team put four Gemini 4 Argon agents, the same general coding agents engineers use, into a fresh Minecraft survival world with one goal: kill the Ender Dragon. Nobody gave them game-specific skills. They wrote and debugged their own programs, split up jobs over in-game chat, kept shared notes, located the stronghold, built a portal and finished the game in just over a day of wall-clock time.
Why it matters
Earlier Minecraft agents relied on Peaceful mode, pre-scouted worlds or dozens of hand-written tools. Here general agents keep a coherent plan across thousands of dependent steps and recover from hundreds of failures, the kind of long-horizon coordination needed for large software and enterprise tasks. It is not pixel-based play: the agents saw structured world data through an API.
