What happened
At TechCrunch Disrupt, Replit co-founder and CEO Amjad Masad said the company had stopped working with Anthropic. He gave cost, the partnership and model performance as the reasons and said OpenAI’s models now do better on Replit’s benchmarks for building apps from scratch. Replit, one of the best-known Claude-powered coding platforms, signed a partnership with OpenAI in August.
TechCrunch could not reconcile the claim with other evidence. A person familiar with the deal said the Anthropic partnership was still in place, and Replit had named Claude Fable models in its production stack only weeks earlier.
Why it matters
Coding platforms are among Anthropic’s biggest API customers. A public break by a major vibe-coding company, announced in the same week Anthropic told investors its growth was slowing, is a competitive signal for OpenAI. Until Replit or Anthropic clarifies, the claim is a CEO’s statement contradicted by an anonymous source.
