Key facts

  • Fund: the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned LLC (not a 501(c)(3)), which Anthropic says gives flexibility between forms of giving (Anthropic news post)
  • Size: 5% of Anthropic’s shares at the start, subject to stockholder approval; for every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, the board may contribute up to an extra 2% (the baseline is not given)
  • Total: with the co-founders’ pledge (made at founding) to donate 80% of their equity and an equity donation match used by about half of employees, ‘roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are committed to the public good’ (Anthropic on X, ~271k views by the evening of Oct 18)
  • Restriction: equity held by the fund ‘will not be used for lobbying or political giving, in the US or abroad’
  • Uses named: large donations to traditional nonprofits or ‘direct distributions to specific populations’; labor-market impacts are the example given (Anthropic earlier committed $200M to that issue). Safety and interpretability research, applied biomedical research and Claude discounts for nonprofits and science stay inside the company, not the fund
  • Compensation framing: Anthropic says it is directing equity that would otherwise go to executives as escalating compensation awards toward the public benefit
  • Still to come: structure, governance and the valuation milestones ‘in the coming months’, and a public benefit report on progress
  • Dollar value: not stated by Anthropic or Reuters. 5% of the $965B post-money valuation of the May 2026 Series H is about $48B (BeInCrypto headline: ‘Anthropic Pledges $48 Billion in Stock Before Its IPO’; article not readable here, 403). Investors have discussed an IPO valuation of $1.5–2T (see Anthropic Q3 revenue $16.8B, adjusted profit (investor day))

  • Reactions on X (fxtwitter, Oct 18): Andrew Curran read ‘direct distributions to specific populations’ as possibly ‘their own form of self-directed global UBI’ (~24k views); Travis Kalanick: ‘Behold, the EA infinite money glitch…’ (~13k)

What happened

On Sunday, Oct 18, 2026, Anthropic published a post and an X thread announcing a new entity, the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. The company will commit 5% of its shares to it at the start, subject to a stockholder vote. The board may add up to 2% more for every 50% increase in the company’s value above a baseline that the post does not give. Anthropic counts this together with two older commitments: the co-founders’ pledge to give away 80% of their equity, and a donation match that about half of employees use. Together it says roughly 20% of the company’s shares are committed to the public good.

The fund is an LLC that Anthropic wholly owns, not a charity. Anthropic says this lets it choose between forms of giving: large grants to nonprofits or “direct distributions to specific populations”. The one example it gives is the labour-market impact of AI, to which it earlier committed $200 million. Its equity may not be used for lobbying or political donations. Governance, the valuation milestones and the people who will decide on spending will be published “in the coming months”.

Anthropic and Reuters give no dollar figure. At the $965 billion valuation of the last private round, 5% is about $48 billion (our arithmetic, matching a BeInCrypto headline); at the $1.5–2 trillion IPO valuation investors have discussed, it would be $75–100 billion.

Why it matters

This is one of the largest charitable equity commitments ever made by a company, announced just before an IPO expected in November. “Direct distributions to specific populations”, read next to Anthropic’s work on AI’s labour-market effects, was taken by observers as a hint of cash transfers to people whose jobs AI displaces, though the company did not say so. Critics on X saw it as a way to keep control and influence through a company-owned vehicle. Because the fund is an LLC owned by Anthropic, its governance (still unpublished) will decide how independent it is.
