Summary
The essay pictures powerful AI as a 'country of geniuses in a datacenter' arriving within years. It sorts the risks into autonomy/misalignment, misuse for destruction (e.g. bioweapons), misuse to seize power (authoritarianism), economic disruption, and indirect effects. The proposed defenses are Constitutional AI training, interpretability, industry transparency, calibrated regulation and export controls, and the essay explicitly rejects both doomerism and complacency.
