Why do we need human mathematicians anymore?

Po-Shen Loh (CMU) argues that advanced AI will create more human "control points" than there are people to staff them, and that this labour shortage should, and will, slow AI deployment while keeping human expert communities in the loop. He lists the recent community statements: the Leiden Declaration (4,000+ signatories), the mathandai.org "Math and AI" statement (7,000+), an open letter against the Caltech "Mathathon" (proofsandprompts.com, 2,000+), and the Royal Society Fellows' letter.
