BusinessVolta Infra, Anthropic, Bitdeer and JPMorgan35 days after June 2026

Volta, a seven-month-old AI cloud startup, lands a $10B six-year compute contract reported to be with Anthropic; its $5B loan is priced near 11%

The takeaway

In October, JPMorgan marketed a $5B leveraged loan for the project at a yield of about 11%, and Bloomberg reported on Oct 12 that JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs underwrote only $1.3B of it to limit their exposure.

Key facts

  • Aug 4, 2026 (Reuters): Volta Infra raised $300M in seed and Series A funding at a $2.4B valuation; rounds led by Azora, Andreessen Horowitz, Altimeter and Nvidia, per Volta
  • Contract: $10B to provide cloud computing in Europe together with Bitdeer Technologies. Volta did not name the customer; Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, said it is Anthropic. Reuters could not verify this and Anthropic declined to comment
  • Site (Bloomberg, via Reuters): a Bitdeer data center in Norway with 133 MW, running Nvidia Vera Rubin systems; six-year agreement. The Next Web later gave 121 MW of IT capacity at Bitdeer’s Tydal campus
  • Volta says Norway is the first project in a pipeline of more than 1 GW of near-term power capacity in North America and Europe, and launched a $5B infrastructure program with asset manager Azora
  • Founders: Ricard Boada and Sofia Gumuzio, former executives of Brookfield’s infrastructure business (Bloomberg via The Star; The Next Web)
  • Lease mismatch noted by The Next Web (Aug 27), citing Bitdeer: about $4.7B of contracted revenue over 16 years, extendable toward $8B, with a tenant termination right at year ten; the reported Anthropic contract runs six years
  • Loan (Bloomberg, Oct 7): JPMorgan is marketing a $5B leveraged loan for Volta Infrastructure Holdings at 6.25 to 6.5 percentage points over the benchmark and 97 to 98 cents on the dollar, a yield of about 11%, ‘one of the highest borrowing costs seen in the market for risky debt’
  • Oct 12 (Bloomberg, paywalled; from Techmeme’s headline): JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs, leading the $5B sale, ‘took a rare move to limit exposure by underwriting just $1.3B’

  • Comparison in Bloomberg’s Oct 7 report: Anthropic’s own $35B debt package for TPUs is backstopped by Broadcom, which lowers its cost; CoreWeave, Lambda and Crusoe borrowed at lower rates

What happened

Volta Infra Holdings left stealth in early August 2026 with $300M of equity and, days later, a $10B contract to supply computing capacity from a data center in Norway that it runs with the bitcoin miner Bitdeer. Volta calls the customer an “AI lab”. Bloomberg identified it as Anthropic and gave the term as six years. Anthropic has not confirmed it.

To pay for the build, JPMorgan began sounding out lenders in late August and marketed a $5B leveraged loan in October. The price offered, about 11%, is among the highest seen for this kind of debt. On Oct 12 Bloomberg reported that the lead banks, JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs, committed their own balance sheets to only $1.3B of the $5B, which it called a rare move.

Why it matters

The deal shows how Anthropic’s capacity is being financed at the edge of the market: a startup a few months old, a converted bitcoin-mining site, a customer contract shorter than the lease behind it, and lenders asking for a double-digit yield while the arranging banks limit their own risk. It came out the same day that Broadcom’s and Intel’s chief executives warned that the cost of capital could become AI’s main bottleneck.

Not verified here: the customer’s identity rests on Bloomberg’s sources. The capacity figure differs between reports (133 MW and 121 MW). The Oct 12 Bloomberg article was not read; only its headline as carried by Techmeme. A search summary mentioned a split into $3.7B and $1.3B pieces and commitments due Oct 14, from a single secondary site; this is left out of the key facts.
