AMD announces Helion, an open rack design for AI agents with up to 32,768 CPU cores
Intel shows Crescent Island GPU and 46,000-core Xeon racks at OCP
Confirmed
The takeaway
At the OCP Global Summit on Oct 12, 2026 AMD announced Helion, an open rack blueprint for running AI agents: a CPU-only rack with up to 32,768 cores of 6th-generation EPYC, and an all-in-one rack that adds Instinct MI350P GPU nodes.

Key facts
- AMD Helion: ‘an open blueprint for agentic AI infrastructure’ based on an OCP spec-design and the Helios rack platform, with an integrated token router that directs agents’ model calls across frontier and open-source models (AMD)
- CPU-only rack: 6th Gen AMD EPYC, up to 32,768 cores, aimed at hyperscalers that run agent execution next to separate inference systems; all-in-one rack: EPYC CPU nodes plus Instinct MI350P GPU nodes, aimed at enterprises; liquid- and air-cooled versions
- Availability: configurations planned for November 2026; AMD plans to contribute the Helion specification to OCP
- Partners named by AMD: Cisco, Dell, Hon Hai, HPE, Lenovo, QCT, Supermicro, Wiwynn
- Dan McNamara (AMD): ‘Agentic AI is not a single workload.’
- Intel GPU D-series (Crescent Island): Xe3P architecture, up to 480 GB LPDDR5X (160 GB on the Intel-branded card), 1.5 TB/s memory bandwidth, 350 W, air-cooled PCIe card; Intel says one card supports models up to 300 billion parameters; customer sampling under way, no release date
- Intel Xeon 6+ racks on Open Rack v3: selected configurations exceed 46,000 cores per rack at 133.45 kW; Intel also announced an AI for Enterprise Agent Toolkit and day-0 support for Meta’s Muse Glimmer
What happened
Both x86 vendors used the Open Compute Project summit to present racks built around CPUs for agent workloads, on the argument that agents spend much of their time running tools, code and orchestration, which need processor cores more than GPUs. AMD’s Helion sits beside its GPU rack Helios. Intel paired dense Xeon racks with a memory-heavy inference card.
Why it matters
Both companies now sell rack designs specifically for “agentic” workloads. They expect a growing share of AI data-center spending to go to CPU capacity for agents, separate from model inference. No customers or prices were announced.
