Key facts
- Announced Oct 21, 2026 by Walmart CEO John Furner at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco; covers Walmart and Sam’s Club
- Agent Gateway: a Walmart MCP server (the protocol originally created by Anthropic) through which approved agents can search inventory and make purchases; agents can reorder usual items without receiving the shopper’s personal information or purchase history
- Agent Profiles (rolling out next month): a dedicated profile per agent inside the customer’s account so agent purchases show separately; the customer can require approval for each transaction or pre-authorise purchases up to a spending limit, which Walmart compares to adding an authorised user to a credit card; profiles are created on first agent purchase and can be deleted at any time; no Walmart+ membership needed
- Rules for agents: they must not act beyond the shopper’s intent, cannot access payment information, and may access only data needed for the task; Walmart’s returns policy applies even when an agent does not act as intended; non-compliant agents will be blocked
- Partners: Walmart previously announced a partnership with Meta’s Muse agent and offers integrations with ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI apps
- Contrast: Amazon has begun blocking AI agents from buying for shoppers (Meta’s agent among them), and several travel and booking sites lock agents out entirely
What happened
Walmart published the terms on which it will let other companies’ agents buy from it: a connector (MCP), an identity for each agent inside the customer’s account, and limits the customer sets. It is the clearest commercial answer yet to the question the banks are answering the other way — whether to let third-party agents act on a customer’s account at all.
Why it matters
Agentic commerce needs an authorisation model, and two have now appeared in the same week: Walmart’s scoped, named, spending-limited agent profiles, and the banks’ read-only-or-nothing stance. Walmart’s rule that its returns policy applies “even when an agent doesn’t act as intended” is an early answer to the liability question Jamie Dimon called a “liability transfer”.
