First Googlebook laptops go on sale in the US: Google's Android-based, Gemini-centred successor to the Chromebook

★★★after cutoffproductGoogleAcerASUSDellHPLenovoconfidence: high

On Oct 4, 2026 the first Googlebooks reached US buyers (Oct 5 in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia). They are laptops from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo on an Android-based platform with ChromeOS elements, built around Gemini. Prices run from $899 to $1,299, with 12 months of Google AI Pro included. Gemini features include Magic Pointer (wiggle the cursor to bring Gemini to whatever is on screen), Rambler (speech to clean writing) and AI-generated widgets. Google is using the line to move its Chromebook base to Gemini.

Key facts

What happened

Google announced the Googlebook in May 2026 as the successor to the Chromebook. It runs on Google's Android stack with ChromeOS desktop parts and a desktop Chrome browser. Five OEM models opened for pre-order on Sept 21 and went on sale in the US on Oct 4, 2026. Gemini is built into the interface. With Magic Pointer, the user wiggles the cursor to ask Gemini about anything on screen. Rambler turns dictation into finished text, and Create My Widget generates custom widgets. Every device comes with a year of Google AI Pro.

Early hands-on coverage (PCWorld, Sept 21) called the platform "made with phone-first users in mind" rather than AI-first. TechCrunch said the cursor feature is unlikely to be the main selling point now that agents can operate computers themselves, and read the line as a way to move Chromebook users, including the large school base, onto Gemini. Independent benchmark and battery reviews had not appeared by launch day.

Why it matters

Googlebook is Google's first laptop platform designed around a frontier assistant, and it bundles paid Gemini subscriptions with the hardware. It is the PC-side counterpart to Gemini on Android, and it competes with Microsoft's Copilot+ PCs and Apple Intelligence Macs for the "AI PC".
